Non-Surgical Gum Treatments

Three out of four people have periodontal(gum)disease. The warning signs are:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Gums that have receded from teeth
  • Pus between teeth and gums when gums are pressed
  • Loose or separating permanent teeth
  • Change in the way teeth fit when biting
  • Any changes in the fit of partial dentures
  • Persistent bad breath

Periodontal disease starts out slowly and quietly, and can progress to a severe form. We here at Park Dental Center carefully examine our patients for this disease because it can be contributory to other diseases such as heart disease, stroke or diabetes. Oral health is an important part of whole body health.

When dentists in Flint MI treat periodontal disease, our hygienists thoroughly clean your teeth and when we do periodontal or gum therapy, you will anesthetized so you don’t feel anything being done. This allows our hygienist to get down where the harmful bacteria are living and remove them and the deposits that cause the disease. If they are not removed, the disease continues to eat away at bone support and cause tooth loosening. The bacteria and inflammatory markers have been shown to be found in the blood stream of people with periodontal disease, and thus the link to worsening of diseases.

We also employ a laser to impart light energy to the tissue and disinfect the pocket. We may choose also to administer oral probiotics, which are good bacteria that repopulate these areas. This is all in an effort to promote healing and prevent recurrence of disease. This has made for very successful results, and decreased recurrence of the disease. We encourage regular recall visits for our patients, because lack of good care and stress are only 2 of the things that can cause the disease to return! Our desire is to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime, and with the technological advances we use at Park Dental Center, that is even more possible than ever before.
